Many PR pros are fantastic storytellers.
If creative thinking and a flair for language helped you land an entry-level marketing position years ago, there’s no good reason those traits can’t help you make a career shift now.
Forbes’ list of four résumé fixes that’ll make you way more popular with recruiters advises using your storytelling prowess to craft a compelling message in your résumé.
Here’s how Forbes says to do that:
[To use] your résumé to tell a compelling story of your myriad accomplishments, you need context. Did you roll out a new CRM system? Be sure to mention that you also evaluated multiple platforms, identified the system most suited to your organization’s needs and negotiated the contract. Your accomplishments will be best illustrated if you also provide the backdrop for which to showcase them.
If you’re a seasoned storyteller without any relevant workplace examples to share, don’t fret. The Muse’s career advice writer, Aja Frost, says drawing from your personal life is OK, too. She also advises honing your “soft skills,” such as communications and leadership abilities.
“If you’ve done something cool in your personal life that either shows off your soft skills or engages your technical skills in a new way, you should definitely include it,” Frost says. “Maybe you’ve run a couple marathons, [which would] demonstrate your adventurous spirit, strong work ethic and desire to challenge yourself.”
To really catch a hiring manager’s attention, recruiters say to let your creative juices flow and draw inspiration from your real-world experiences.Test your linguistic prowess by pursuing a job with Indeed.com, which is seeking a Texas-based content marketing manager . Candidates for this position should be experienced in creating compelling content for keynote speeches, client presentations and webinar presentations.
