30 jobs in the PR and marketing world

Networking is essential in PR, but it’s rarely taught in school.

Mastering that skillset often takes time, practice and an ability to shake off plenty of rejection. Although some PR pros learned how to network at a young age, for many the process is something you “stumble through.”

That was the case for education consultant, Kathryn Clowes:

I continued to stumble my way through learning to network, not realizing the true importance of it until I was in my late twenties. Students and adults alike are told that it’s not what you know but who you know that counts. Why then, aren’t we teaching such a valuable skill in school? These are formative years [when] students can start practicing and building their networks.

If you’re a seasoned PR executive with a knack for networking, Clowes says to share your know-how. Because mastering this crucial ability can take years, it’s important to pass along insights, confidence and form.

From Clowes, here are four ways to help any networking neophytes in your life:

1. Remind them that networking can be awkward. Emphasize the importance of connecting and giving back.

2. Help them practice what to say . Help them practice a small elevator speech that encourages them to get used to hearing themselves talk about themselves.

3. Show them how to network. Share personal stories and explain how you cultivated your network.

4. Show them the importance of following up. Explain how to do it: Talk about thank-you notes, phone call follow-ups and helping others in your network.

Recent PR graduates and current students can improve their networking prowess this summer as Public Broadcasting Service’s next corporate communications intern .

Candidates for this Arlington, Virginia-based role should have excellent communication skills—both oral and written—and strong presentation skills. The intern will assist with project research, writing, proofing, event logistics and other efforts to support PBS’ public relations programs.
