30 jobs in the PR and marketing world

Many former journalists have gravitated toward PR careers because of a simple reason—newspaper jobs are hard to find.

To be more exact, the Bureau of Labor Statistics says publishing positions have declined almost 60 percent since 1990. Although that isn’t exactly “news,” the bureau’s recent jobs report reveals that “over the same period, employment in internet publishing and broadcasting rose from about 30,000 to nearly 198,000.”

From the BLS’ current employment statistics program:

Few industries have been affected by the digital or information age as much as newspapers and other traditional published industries (books, magazines, etc.). In June 1990, there were nearly 458,000 people employed in the newspaper publishing industry; by March 2016, that figure had fallen to about 183,000.

A BLS chart shows both the rise in digital publishing positions and the decline in “newspapers, periodicals and books.”

If you’re a relentless newshound with your heart set on furthering your career in publishing, consider a position with a digital focus.

Bloomberg seeks its next Washington, D.C.-based digital editor. An employee in this position will be responsible for editing news, features and breaking news stories for content, style and digital functionality. A person in this role should also be prepared to lead social media efforts in a large coverage area.
